Cutting agents within Automotive & marine industry have never been such an integral part for not only the professional, but also the enthusiast. The demand for slick and flawless finishes continues to grow within ever increasing motor industry.
The cutting agent builds the base for detailer to apply gloss booster, sealers, waxes and other products alike and is where precious labour time can be saved.
So what are the requirements and criteria to take into consideration when purchasing a cutting compound?
The following are important factors within the conundrum of parting with your hard earned cash and choosing your weapon of shine.
- Performance and ability of the cutting agents
- Usage efficiency
- Ease of use and cleanliness
PERFORMACE & ABILTY
The end users goal is to gain the best possible finish and the demands of a professional is to achieve these results with minimum effort and labour time. Presta cutting crème’s are extremely efficient when used correctly. Once users become accustomed to the product range, they quickly recognise using Presta light cutting agent will gain the desired finish where previously aggressive product was used.
A manufacturer will produce products to the demand of the market, not specifically to a process requirement. Meaning just because you have a medium grade compound that does the job, there is no need to make a heavy aggressive product. If the user’s ability, their chosen process, or if indeed market place simply demands the harsher options, then they shall have it!
So this is where the understanding of your product and how it can work is very important. Presta and Malco have several cutting/finishing crème’s for all individuals chosen methods of application and techniques.
The number machine polishing rule!
The number one rule of machine polishing is to start with the lightest cutting agent and then work through the grades to more aggressive product if you are not achieving the desired result. Starting with the aggressive option first creates a necessity to work through the grades to refine the clear coat and also heightens the potential for buffer trails.
The misconception of an absolute requirement for a highly aggressive product is incorrect. With Presta cutting cremes it is possible remove 2000 grit scratches with a product which is not even a cutting compound. Thus meaning you have eradicated the necessity of lengthy refining, just a swirl remover on a soft application head is then required. Presta Chroma Ultra Polish completes this task within an exceptionally clean and tidy manor. Eliminating cutting stages, and is hugely labour efficient. Any undue throw removed easily due to the water based composition.
Take a look at the Aston Martin. In this case the paintwork was wet sanded using DA & 2000 grit, polished with Presta Ultra light and followed by Presta swirl remover. The Aston’s interior was also detailed, the entire job being completed in an impressive 8.5 hours.
The option for a small localised attention or any other demand with Ultra Cutting crème or Supercut is also there. If heavier 2000 grit sanding or even if wet sanding is not a preferred option, then three+ stage polishing then Presta can deliver. Presta Ultra cutting crème removes medium to heavy scratches, oxidation and weathering. Diminishing filler free abrasives help polish away scratches and swirls. The option for a small localised attention or any other demand with Ultra Cutting crème or Supercut is also there. Presta bottles come with colour coded ribbons to match the appropriate heads, which are primarily to be used in conjunction with Presta’s wool heads to maximise performance of the product (as seen in the photo’s). Users will experience that the wool has capability of mechanically removing defects with the use of very little product (with no product at all in some cases) without effecting clear coats. Thus resulting in less product consumption.
Presta will also work very well with foam if that is a preferred method. The performance of wool is an advantage over foam. The consideration that the majority of ‘grazing’, ‘strike through’ or ‘burning’, occurs from build-up of heat from friction caused by foam, not ‘product’ damage. Foam heats up paintwork quickly, whilst wool doesn’t.
The foam pad naturally performs differently with the influence of friction heat and also with climate temperature. Wool does not. The durability of a foam pad will also be a fraction of a wool pads.
The flip side of less mechanical friction heat is you can work areas for longer spells without a high risk of effecting the clear coat. Areas with surface damaged can sustain prolonged machine polishing without the risk a sponge head may pose.
